Blues, rock, country, jazz; whatever the occasion, there is a pretty good chance
that the soulful sound you'll hear is that of the diatonic harmonica, or
blues harp. This apparently simple instrument has been around in one form or another for
a lot of years. Although the design has changed relatively little over the last hundred and fifty
years, the materials have changed dramatically!
The traditional wooden comb is now often made of plastic or aluminium alloy,
and computerised production in the best factories ensures more consistent
quality than was ever possible before.

The major diatonic tuning is the "standard" Richter tuning used by all harmonica makers. It is one of the most versatile tunings in use. Originally arranged for playing popular two-chord German folk melodies and dance tunes, its uses have evolved over the years. Due to an accident of physics, certain notes can be bent or lowered in pitch, making this little instrument a major player in the sound of blues, jazz, country and rock.

This is a multi-cultural tuning; the harmonic minor scale has a predominantly Eastern European flavour suitable for Yiddish, Gypsy, Greek and Middle Eastern minor key music.
